Geek

Folded in 2016 from a square of watercolour paper (ca 30cm by 30cm)

Model height: ca 30cm

The “Geek”, in its old meaning, was a dubious character to be found on medieval fairs and carnivals throughout Europe, I believe. It used to amuse the crowds in ways that are quite grim by any modern standard, but I did encounter a modern (harmless !) version of him in the South of France a little earlier that year.

This is very much a caricature, as you’ll note. It is one of those models in which lines dominate over volumes: not a single part of this mask could be said to be realistic, in particular because no face has this type of volumes. And yet, pareidolia does its work, it’s undoubtedly a face.
